영어성경공부 같이 해봅니다. 성경말씀은 사도행전 9장 36절에서 43절 말씀입니다. 사도 베드로가 도르가를 살리는 장면입니다.
36. In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor.
37. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.
38. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!"
39. Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room, All the windows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
40. Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up.
41. He took her by the hand and helped her to feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive.
42. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.

사도행전 9장 36절을 봅니다.
36. In Joppa/there was a disciple named Tabitha/(which, when translated, is Dorcas),/who was always doing good and helping the poor.
위 문장을 기차가 앞으로 칙칙폭폭 나가는 것처럼 읽어보겠습니다.
"욥바에/다비다라는 제자가 있었습니다./그건 번역하면 도르가입니다./그 사람은 항상 좋은 일만 했고요 남을 도와주었습니다."
절대 해석하기 위해서 다시 앞으로 돌아가지 않았습니다. 의미덩어리단위로 딱딱 끊어서 읽으면서 이미지만 머리에 그려넣으면 됩니다. 우리나라 사람들 영어공부 좀 한 사람이라면 who만 보면 반사적으로 관계대명사라는 단어가 떠올릅니다. 그 조건반사가 편하게 영어읽는 것을 방해합니다. 관계대명사 몰라도 영어 잘할 수 있습니다.
영어읽기가 익숙해지면 서서히 의미덩어리들의 크기를 늘려가면 됩니다.
사도행전 9장 37절 입니다.
37. About that time/she became sick and died,/and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.
(그때에/그녀가 병들어 죽었습니다./그녀의 몸을 씻어 다락에 두었습니다.)

사도행전 9장 38절,
38. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!"
(룻다가 욥다근처입니다./그래서 제자들이 들었습니다, 베드로가 룻다에 있다는 것을/그들이 두 사람을 보내서 그에게 간청했습니다. "제발 바로 와 주세요"라고.)
여기까지 별로 어려울 것이 없습니다. 직독직해로 쭉쭉 읽어 나가면 됩니다.
사도행전 9장 39절,
39. Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room, All the windows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
(베드로가 그들과 갔습니다./그가 도착했을 때 그는 위쪽으로 안내되어 다락방으로 갔습니다./ 모든 과부들이 그를 둘러싸고 섰습니다./울면서 그에게 보여주었습니다/겉옷(robes)과 다른 옷들을/근데 그것은 도르가가 만들것입니다./그녀가 다른 사람들과 함께 있을 때 만든 것입니다.)
사도행전 9장 40절,
40. Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up.
(베드로가 그들을 보냈습니다. 방바깥으로/그리고 그가 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다./돌아섰는데 죽은 여인을 향해 돌아섰네요/그가 말했습니다. 다비야야 일어나라/그녀가 눈을 떴습니다./베드로를 보고 앉았습니다.)
사도행전 9장 41절,
41. He took her by the hand and helped her to feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive.
직독직해로 쭉쭉 읽어나가면서 해석해봅니다.
(그는 그녀를 붙잡았네요. 손으로/그녀를 도와줍니다. 서도록/그리고 그가 불렀습니다. 성도들과 과부들을 /그녀를 보여줍니다. 그들에게 살아있는 것을)
(해설) 동작을 나타내는 문장을 살펴봅니다.
The dog bit him on the leg. [개가 그를 물었네요. 그 부분은 다리입니다.(on the leg)]
I kissed the baby on the cheek. [내가 아이에게 키스를 했습니다. 부분은 빰입니다. (on the cheek)]
My father struck me on the head. [아버지가 날 쳤는데...머리를 쳤네요(on the head)]
* He helped her to feet.
(그가 그녀를 도와주었는데. 그 결과 그녀가 섰습니다. 즉 to feet, 발로 선 것입니다.)
사도행전 9장 42절,
42. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.
(이것이 알려졌습니다. 욥바전체에/많은 사람들이 주를 믿었습니다./베드로는 욥바에 얼마간 머물렀네요/무두장이 시몬과 함께)
* tanner는 '무두장이'라고 되어있네요. 우리말 사전을 봅니다. 무두장이는 "짐승의 날가죽에서 털과 기름을 뽑아 가죽을 부드럽게 만드는 일을 직업으로 하는 사람"입니다. "피혁공"으로 보면 되겠네요.
영영사전으로 단어의 의미를 살펴봅니다.
tanner: a craftsman who tans skins and hides.
tan: a browing of the skin resulting from exposure to the rays of the sun
treat skins and hides with tannic acid (타닌산) so as to convert them into leather
