동지(winter solstice)와 하지(summer solstice), 팥죽(Red bean porridge)

동지. 겨울중 밤의 길이가 가장 긴 날이 동지입니다. 영어로는 winter solstice라고 합니다. solstice는 영어로 이렇게 설명하고 있습니다. solstice means either of the two times of the year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. 태양이 북쪽 또는 남쪽으로 가장 치우쳤을 때를 solstice라고 합니다.

하지는 일년중 낮의 길이가 가장 긴 날입니다. 하지는 영어로 summer solstice라고 합니다.

동지(winter solstice)날 길고 긴 밤에는 팥죽을 먹습니다. 동지섣달은 영어로 November and Decemeber by the luner calender (=the last two lunar months)라고 합니다. 동짓날 먹는 팥죽은 red-bean porridge being taken on the winter solstice라고 합니다.

porridge는 '죽'입니다. 'rice porridge'는 '쌀죽'. 야채와 고기를 섞어 놓은 잡탕죽은 'hotchpotch'입니다.
